Dynamics and Mechanism of Insect-Transmitted Pathogens

This satellite meeting brings together scientists with an interest in studying the diverse aspects of insect-transmitted plant pathogen interactions with their plant hosts and insect vectors. These pathogens cause the most destructive diseases of plants and are often responsible for eradication of entire crop industries in countries or regions. Current examples include Olive Quick Decline Syndrome (Xylella fastidiosa), citrus greening (Candidatus Liberibacter sp.), Lime Witch’s Broom and Grapevine Flavescence doree (Candidatus Phytoplasma) and Cassava mosaic (geminivirus). The meeting will cover (1) Recognition and induction of immunity, (2) Effectors and modulation of insect/plant processes, (3) Epidemiology and insect transmission and (4) Genomics and Evolution. Extracellular and Intracellular Perception of Viruses

There have been significant advances in recent years providing new insights into the mechanisms of virus recognition by host cells. The presentations at this meeting will bring together recent models on how virus double strand RNAs and viral proteins are perceived by hosts to elicit immune responses, as well as new insights into cellular receptors in antiviral immunity and symptom development. We have seen major advances in research that have advanced our understanding of the frontline of virus infection and plant defenses. The broad range of early responses to plant viruses include regulation at the mRNA level of gene expression and translation, post translational modification of proteins, and defense responses involving membrane-anchored receptors. The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss the co-evolving virulence and plant resistance strategies exemplify the evolutionary arms race. Gram-Positive Plant-Associated Bacteria

The purpose of this satellite meeting is to bring together scientist working on Gram-positive bacteria associated with plants. The meeting will include molecular mechanisms used by Gram-positive bacteria to cause disease. Meeting topics will also include the role of Gram-positive bacteria in plant-associated microbial communities and beneficial interactions. Interactions Between Plants and Human Pathogens

Contamination of foods with human pathogens is a major issue to society with increasing numbers of disease outbreaks in the last several years. Recent studies revealed that plants are not passive vectors for human pathogens. Likewise, it seems that the main causative pathogens have the adaptive flexibility to live in the plant environment. The objectives of this meeting are to capitalize on the expertise of the plant-microbe interaction community and foster the exchanges of ideas and perspective in a multidisciplinary setting. This meeting aims to bridge the gaps between plant sciences, food microbiology, and food safety by highlighting: 1) current knowledge of plant responses towards contamination, 2) the biology and ecology of human pathogens on the phyllosphere, and 3) the crucial role that plant biologists and microbiologists can play on the prevention of human disease outbreaks. New Insights into Rice-Pathogen Interactions

Powdery Mildew Symposium

This satellite meeting represents the 7th International Powdery Mildew Workshop. It is meant to bring together scientists with an interest in plant-powdery mildew interactions and the biology of powdery mildew fungi. In an informal atmosphere, we will present and discuss current topics of powdery mildew research. This will cover both the plant and the fungal side of the interaction and will include topics like resistance, pathogenesis, genome architecture and evolution, effector protein function and diversity and other matters.
